Google dominates the search engine market with around 90%. In search of better data protection, however, more and more users and companies are looking for alternatives. Even though “googling” has become a synonym for internet search, a whole series of other search engines have been established that actively support the user in the search for the right results. We present 5 search engines that we believe are equal to Google.
Admittedly, alternative search engines find it difficult to assert themselves alongside the search engine giant Google. These often convince with better data protection and with some of them you can even do something good.
With a market share of around 2.5%, Bing ranks second among the most used search engines. In 1998 the previous version MSN Search was introduced and was launched in June 2009 under the current name. There has also been a cooperation with Yahoo since July 2009. Similar to Google’s Street View, Bing has Virtual Earth. Bing also offers the option of booking advertisements or having a Bing Places entry created for companies. Online campaigns on Bing have the advantage that the prices per click are currently lower than on Google. This is particularly beneficial for affiliates and companies. It is therefore particularly interesting for private individuals who want to protect their data better. Companies can advertise on DuckDuckGo via sponsored links that are displayed above the search results, similar to Google.
Search engine optimization also works for Duckduckgo and essentially does not differ from the SEO measures that would be used for Google.
Small “disadvantage”: Since Duckduckgo does not access the locations of the users or stores data that indicate the location of the user, the local SEO optimization works differently than with Google. Baidu is a Chinese company that operates the search engine of the same name. Similar to Google, Baidu also provides cloud computing, mobile payment and travel portals as well as maps, music and video searches. The search engine is now one of the five most frequently visited websites worldwide, which is not least due to its popularity in the Far East. Similar to Google, Baidu’s ads are mostly placed on the right side. They can also appear in random order on the pages of the search results in between and are generally more clearly identified as an advertisement. Baidu is also more complex when it comes to SEO. Anyone who wants to do search engine optimization for their website goes through a long review process. This takes time, but has the advantage with optimal preparatory work from Baidu to be able to appear directly at higher ranking positions. The search engine is still particularly popular in the Far East, but due to the high growth rate of page views, Baidu is also very interesting for forward-thinking SEO strategists.
Search something and do good. Ecosia is an ecologically inspired search engine that uses advertising revenue to plant trees in Burkina Faso, Africa. The areas of security, privacy and a user experience without tracking are very important for the French company Qwant. In addition to the classic web search, Qwant also offers search in the area of social media, which is not yet available on other search engines. In contrast to others, the search engine published in 2013 does not deliver personalized search results. If personal results are desired by the user, an account can be created. IP addresses are also not recorded in advance. Qwant advertises never to show intrusive advertisements. For this reason, every advertisement that Qwant displays must fully comply with its values and our quality standards. This makes users happy, but it could be doom for advertising companies or affiliates. The search engine also performs comparatively poorly in terms of SEO. The aspect of data protection is another hurdle, because as soon as there is no more statistical data about visitor behavior, SEOs also have no data available to analyze in order to optimize websites.
Besides to Gigant Google, there are a handful of search engines that are well worth a change. If you want to protect your data better, you should search via DuckDuckGo or Qwant in the future.
