I accidentally turned on Live Photos for a long time, and now a huge part of my iPhone photo library is using extra storage. I need help figuring out the fastest way to remove Live Photos from all photos at once without deleting the pictures themselves. Is there a built-in iPhone method or a safe workaround?
I dealt with this on a friend’s iPhone not long ago. They had years of Live Photos piled up and thought the choice was all or nothing. It wasn’t.
The first thing I asked was simple. Do you want to keep the still pictures, or do you want all of it gone? Your answer changes the whole process.
If you want the Live Photos deleted and you do not care about keeping the images, do this:
- Open Photos.
- Go to Media Types > Live Photos.
- Tap Select.
- Pick the ones you want removed.
- Delete them.
- Clear Recently Deleted, or your storage will still look full for a while.
If you want to keep the pictures and remove the motion part, I would not do it by hand unless you only have a small batch. I tried helping with a bigger library once, and it got annoying fast.
What ended up working was Clever Cleaner. We opened it, went into the Lives section, picked the Live Photos, and hit Compress. The name is a bit off, since it does more than shrink file size. It makes regular still-photo copies, then lets you decide whether to keep or delete the original Live versions.
The steps looked like this:
- Open Clever Cleaner.
- Tap Lives.
- Sort by date or file size.
- Select the Live Photos you want to deal with.
- Tap Compress.
- Check the new still images.
- Remove the original Live Photos if the results look good.
What I liked most, and yeah, I did not expect this part to matter so much, was how it grouped everything together. No digging around in the Photos app. It also showed the storage savings before we removed anything, which helped since space was the whole reason we were doing this.
Then we kept going. In Similars, there were duplicate shots. In Heavies, a few giant videos. Then a dumb amount of old screenshots. Kinda turned into a full cleanup session by accident, lol.
My take is pretty plain. If you only have 10 or 20 Live Photos, use Apple’s built-in options. If you have a few hundred, a tool like Clever Cleaner saves a lot of tapping and cuts down the hassle.

No true one-tap Apple option exists for “remove Live from my whole library.” That part is annoyng, but it matters. You either delete the files, or you convert them.
I slightly disagree with @mikeappsreviewer on one point. I would not start inside Photos if your library is huge. Photos gets slow when you mass-select a ton of items, and mis-taps happen.
Faster route if you want to keep the still images:
Use Clever Cleaner. It sorts Live Photos into one place, then you convert batches into stills and remove the original Live versions after checking them. For a large library, that is faster than opening each photo and turning off Live one by one, which is brutal.
If you want all Live Photos gone, with no need to keep the image:
Filter your library by Live Photos, bulk delete, then empty Recently Deleted. If you skip the last part, storage won’t drop right away. A lot of peple miss that.
Before doing anything, check Settings, Camera, Preserve Settings, and turn off Live Photo there too. Otherwise your iPhone keeps making new ones.

There isn’t a true Apple-made “convert every Live Photo in my library to stills” button, and that’s the annoying part. So I kinda disagree with @mikeappsreviewer a bit if the goal is speed across your whole library, not just managing a few albums.
What I’d do first is check whether the storage hit is even worth the hassle. Live Photos are bigger, yes, but not always insanely bigger unless you’ve got thousands. If you want proof before touching anything, go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage > Photos and see how bad it really is. Sometimes people spend an hour fixing a problem that only frees a couple GB. Been there, lol.
Also, one thing @shizuka only sorta hints at: if your Photos are synced with iCloud Photos, bulk deletion or conversion can take a while to reflect everywhere. So don’t panic if space doesn’t come back instantly. Apple loves making that feel broken.
If your goal is to keep the image but stop future Live junk, do this before cleanup:
- Open Camera
- Tap the Live icon off
- Then go to Settings > Camera > Preserve Settings
- Make sure Live Photo stays off
For the actual cleanup, the least annoying route for a huge library is using Clever Cleaner to review Live Photos in batches instead of fighting the Photos app forever. I wouldn’t call it “one tap,” because it’s not, but it is probly the fastest practical option if you want to keep the still shots. It’s more realistic than manually editing every photo, which is honestly masochistic.

Apple really should’ve added a global “strip Live effect” option years ago.
I’d add one angle the others barely touched: if you use iCloud Photos, deleting or converting Live Photos does not always reduce device storage much if Optimize iPhone Storage is already on. It can cut iCloud usage more than local usage. So before a huge cleanup, check whether the savings you want are on the phone, in iCloud, or both.
Also, slight disagreement with the “just mass delete from Live Photos album” idea from @shizuka, @andarilhonoturno, and @mikeappsreviewer: that’s only clean if you truly do not care about losing those shots entirely. A lot of people think they’re deleting “the Live part” but are actually deleting the photo too.
What Apple still doesn’t offer is a global “strip motion from every Live Photo” switch. That’s the missing piece.
If your goal is keep the photo, lose the motion, Clever Cleaner is the practical shortcut.

And definitely turn Live Photo off in Camera settings first, otherwise you’re bailing water while the tap is still running.
