I’m trying to use the Photos app on my iPhone to find similar or duplicate pictures, but it’s not showing matches I know are there. I’ve checked my library and waited for syncing, but the feature still doesn’t seem to work. I need help figuring out why Photos isn’t finding similar photos and what I can do to fix it.
Finding Similar Photos on iPhone
I ran into this the hard way. The iPhone Photos app sorts stuff well enough by date, people, trips, pets, all of that. What it does not do well is bunch together photos which look almost the same.
So if your camera roll has:
- five versions of the same sunset
- a stack of selfies taken one second apart
- edited copies of the same image

What worked better for me

- When you’re done, clear the Recently Deleted album in Photos if you want your storage back right away.
Stuff beyond similar-photo cleanup
I ended up poking around the rest of the app too. A few parts were useful:
- Heavies helped me spot the biggest videos first.
- I compressed some videos instead of deleting them.
- I turned Live Photos into regular stills to cut file size.
- I cleared out years of old screenshots.
- Swipe Mode made review faster when I wanted control and not full auto cleanup.
One thing I liked, and yeah I care about this, is it does the processing on the iPhone itself. My library was not being pushed off somewhere else for sorting.
If you want to stay with Apple’s built-in tools
You still have a few decent ways to narrow things down, even if it takes more effort.
- Use Search for people, pets, places, objects, or events. Similar shots often show up near each other.
- Sort by date or by trip. Near-duplicates are usually taken within the same short stretch.
- Check Burst albums and keep the best frame.
- Browse sections like People & Pets, Trips, or Media Types so you are not combing through the whole library at once.
My take after doing this
If you’re cleaning a few hundred photos, the built-in Photos app is fine. Slow, but fine.
If your library has a few thousand images, I would not want to do it manually. The main time-saver is automatic grouping. Without it, you’re pecking through the camera roll one tiny cluster at a time, and it gets annoying prety quick.

Photos on iPhone does not have a true “similar photos” finder. That’s the main issue.
Apple Photos finds exact or near-exact duplicates in the Duplicates album. It does not reliably group lookalikes, burst-style shots, cropped edits, or pics taken a second apart. So if you expect “same scene, slightly different frame,” Photos often misses it. That part trips up a lot of pepole.
A few things to check first.

Your iPhone needs to finish indexing.
Keep it charging, locked, and on Wi-Fi for a while. Sometimes Photos analysis takes hours or days on big libraries. -
Duplicates only appears when iOS finds matches.
No matches found means either no exact dupes by Apple’s rules, or indexing is not done. -
iCloud Photos sync does not equal photo analysis.
Syncing uploads files. Analysis happens separately on-device. -
Edited photos often do not count.
A crop, filter, resize, format change, or saved copy from another app can stop Apple from flagging it.
I disagree a bit with @mikeappsreviewer on one point. Built-in Photos is not “fine” once your library gets messy, even at a few hundred images. It’s ok for exact duplicates, not for cleanup by similarity.

Short version, nothing is broken. Photos is doing less than most people expect.

It finds duplicates pretty well when they’re basically the same file or a very close system-recognized copy. Apple’s Duplicates album is more like “same asset detected” than “these photos look alike.” That means it can skip:
- burst leftovers
- edited copies
- screenshots saved twice in different ways
- HEIC and JPEG versions of the same picture
- Live Photo vs still export
Another thing people miss is that duplicate detection is local logic, not a visual search tool. So even if two images look obviously similar to you, Photos may treat them as unrelated.
A useful test: pick two photos you believe should match and compare:
- file type
- resolution
- whether one is edited
- whether one came from Messages, WhatsApp, AirDrop, or Files
- whether one is in Shared Library
If any of those differ, Apple often refuses to group them.
I slightly disagree with the “just wait longer” advice too. Waiting helps if indexing is unfinished, sure. But if Photos has already had days on power and Wi-Fi, more waiting usually does not magically turn it into a similar-photo finder.
If your goal is actual visual grouping, Clever Cleaner makes more sense than the stock Photos app.

So the short answer is: Photos is probably not broken. It just does not do the job you expect. If you need “same moment, slightly different photo,” Apple Photos is weak there, and that’s where Clever Cleaner or a similar tool fills the gap.
