I’ve accidentally followed a bunch of random accounts on TikTok while scrolling too fast, and now my Following tab is a mess. I can’t figure out the fastest or easiest way to unfollow a lot of people without spending hours doing it one by one. Is there a simple method or setting to manage and clean up my TikTok following list efficiently?
Yeah TikTok makes this annoying on purpose.
Fastest options right now:
-
From your Following list
• Open TikTok
• Go to your profile
• Tap “Following” at the top
• You will see a list of everyone you follow
• Tap the “Following” button next to each name, it turns to “Follow” again
This is the cleanest way. You can go down the list pretty fast with both thumbs. -
From the Following feed
• Go to the Following tab on the main feed
• Tap a profile picture to open their page
• Tap “Following” to unfollow
• Swipe back, repeat
Slower, but good if you want to keep some people and remove obvious randos. -
Use the “Suggested accounts” trick
• Go to profile
• Tap the three lines in the top right
• Settings and privacy
• Privacy
• Scroll to “Suggestions” and turn off whatever you do not want
This stops more random follows from getting suggested to you. It does not remove old ones, but it keeps things from getting worse. -
Do small batches
TikTok rate limits sometimes. If you unfollow too fast you might get a “too many actions” message. Do like 30 to 50 at a time, wait a few minutes, then do another batch. -
Use a desktop browser if you have it
• Go to tiktok dot com and log in
• Click your profile picture
• Click “Following”
• Use mouse to click down the list, it feels faster than tapping on a phone
Avoid third party “mass unfollow” apps.
They often need your login info or token and many accounts get flagged or shadowbanned after using them.
If you want to clean smarter, sort by who interacts with you:
• Check your notifications tab
• Keep people who like or comment a lot
• Remove the rest from the Following list
It is still manual, but once you get into a rhythm you clear a few hundred in like 10 to 15 minutes.
Yeah, TikTok kind of punishes fat‑fingered people like us.
I agree with most of what @voyageurdubois said, but if you’ve already got a huge mess, tapping every single “Following” button one by one is still a slog. A few extra tricks that helped me clear a few hundred pretty fast:
-
Use your “Favorites” as a whitelist
Before mass‑unfollowing, quickly save the people you definitely want to keep:- Go to your Following list
- Tap into creators you actually care about
- Add them to Favorites (bookmark icon) or make a simple “Real follows” collection
Then when you’re doing the unfollow purge, you can just leave everyone in Favorites alone and nuke the rest without overthinking it.
-
Sort visually and go “section by section”
TikTok doesn’t give sorting filters, but your Following list often clusters: language, niche, time you followed, etc.- Scroll until you hit a chunk of obvious randos or a foreign-language cluster
- Clear that entire visible screen in one go
- Scroll, repeat
You’re not making micro decisions on every account, just deleting entire “blocks” of junk.
-
Use two hands and a rhythm
Slightly disagree with the “cleanest” = following list only idea. The fastest for me:- Open Following list
- Use both thumbs to tap down the right side where the “Following” buttons are
- Don’t even read names unless something really stands out
It becomes like a little rhythm game. You can easily hit 5–7 unfollows per second until you hit the rate limit.
-
Prepare for the rate limit instead of fighting it
TikTok will hit you with “too many actions” if you spam:- Set a timer for 60–90 seconds
- Unfollow as fast as possible until it dings
- Stop completely for 2–3 minutes and just scroll For You or get water
- Repeat cycle
This is faster overall than constantly poking it and triggering the limit every 20 taps.
-
Clean from your notifications backwards
One other angle that’s a bit different from what @voyageurdubois mentioned:- Open your notifications
- Any creator you see a lot (likes, replies, lives) is probably worth keeping
- Manually check that you still follow those people, and if you do, toss them in Favorites
Then when you’re mass‑unfollowing, assume “if I never see them in notifications, they’re disposable.”
-
Stop accidental follows at the source
The real fix is changing how you swipe:- Slow your thumb slightly when swiping up, so you don’t graze the profile pic
- Avoid double‑tapping near the top-left where the avatar is, especially in lives
Also, if you’re prone to this when you’re tired or half asleep, just don’t scroll TikTok in that state. Learned that one the hard way at 2am following like 70 crypto tarot accounts somehow.
-
Do NOT use any “auto unfollow” tools
On this I totally agree: third‑party “mass unfollow” apps are a trap. They:- Often need your login or cookies
- Can trigger security flags and lockouts
- Sometimes unfollow random people you actually like
TikTok is touchy about automated behavior, so it’s not worth losing the account over some lazy cleanup.
It’s still manual, but if you:
- Favorite your must‑keep accounts first
- Then clear your Following list in fast visual “chunks” with both thumbs
- And work in short bursts to dodge the rate limit
You can get a few hundred unfollows done in like 10–15 minutes without wanting to throw your phone.
