My iPad storage filled up fast after a recent iOS update, and now it’s running slow and freezing when I open apps. I’ve deleted photos and unused apps, but there’s still a lot of junk or cache I can’t seem to clear. I need help finding the best iPad cleaner app that’s safe, actually works, and can free up storage without causing more problems.
I’ve tried a pile of iPad cleaning apps over the years, and I still end up back at Clever Cleaner.
Most of the junk apps I tested spent too much time pretending to clean things which barely moved the storage needle. On my iPad, the real problem was always the same. Photos. Videos. Old screenshots. Duplicate shots from burst mode. Live Photos I forgot existed. This app went straight for those, which is why I kept it.
What I used the most:
- Smart Cleanup, for removing duplicate and near-duplicate photos
- Heavies, for spotting giant videos fast
- Video Compression, when I wanted the clip but not the original file size
- Live Photo conversion, to keep the image and drop the extra motion data
- Swipe Mode, for going through the library fast without getting lost
My own result was pretty solid. I cleared a decent amount of space without tossing anything I cared about. The photo scan did a better job than I expected with near-identical images, especially those annoying sets where you take four of the same thing and only one matters. The Heavies section was even more useful for me. It surfaced a few videos chewing through multiple gigabytes, and instead of deleting them, I compressed most of them and kept the footage.
One thing I liked, and this mattered more than I thought, was how it handled privacy. The processing stayed on the iPad. My photo library didn’t get shipped off somewhere. I also didn’t run into ads every thirty seconds, and I wasn’t getting hammered with subscription popups. For a free app, that felt weirdly normal in a good way.
If your goal is simple, free up storage on an iPad without sitting there hand-sorting files for an hour, this is the one I’d point you to first.

I’d start with one blunt point. Most “cleaner” apps on iPad do not clear system cache the way people expect. iPadOS keeps a lot of that locked down. So if your iPad is freezing after an update, a cleaner app helps most when your storage issue is photos and videos, not hidden OS junk.
I agree with @mikeappsreviewer on one part. Clever Cleaner is worth trying first. I don’t use it for the same reasons, though. I care less about swipe sorting and more about finding storage hogs fast. If your goal is best app to free up iPad storage and speed up a slow iPad, photo library cleanup is where you’ll see the biggest gain.
What I’d do, in order:

Check Settings, General, iPad Storage.
See which app or category is bloated. If Photos is huge, use Clever Cleaner. If Safari is huge, clear Safari history and website data. If Messages is huge, delete large attachments. -
Offload apps, don’t delete them first.
Offloading often frees a few GB with zero pain. The app stays on your home screen, docs stay saved. -
Restart after cleanup.
Sounds dumb, but after an iOS update my iPad was laggy for a day. A hard restart helped more than one “cleanup” app did. -
Watch System Data.
If System Data exploded after the update, no cleaner app fixes all of it. Backup, then reboot, and if it stays bad, update again or do a restore. Annoying, yep. -
Remove downloaded media.
Netflix, YouTube, Spotify, Plex, podcast apps. People forget this stuff. I found 18 GB on mine once. Kinda embarassing.

Short version, Clever Cleaner is one of the few iPad cleaner apps I’d bother installing. But if the slowdown started right after iOS updated, the app alone isn’t the whole fix. Check storage categories first, then clean, then reboot. If System Data is the pig here, you may need the annoying fix, not the easy one.
I’m gonna disagree a little with @mikeappsreviewer and @kakeru on one thing: I don’t think the “best iPad cleaner app” is the whole answer when the slowdown started right after an iOS update. Sometimes iPadOS is just being messy for a bit, and cleaner apps get blamed or praised for stuff they can’t actually touch.
That said, if your storage is getting murdered by media, Clever Cleaner is probly the most useful one to try because it targets the stuff that actually eats space instead of doing fake “RAM boost” nonsense. I would use it mostly for library cleanup, not as some miracle repair tool.
What helped me more than expected:
- Open Files app and check Downloads and On My iPad. Random PDFs, zip files, video exports, Procreate files, etc. stack up fast.
- Check Notes app attachments. Huge scanned docs can live there forever.
- If you use Mail, removing and re-adding the account can sometimes clear bloated local cache.
- Turn off background app refresh for junky apps. Doesn’t free much storage, but it can help the freezing feel less awful.
- Leave the iPad charging on Wi-Fi overnight once or twice after the update. Indexing/photos analysis can calm down after that.
For an actual app rec, yeah, Clever Cleaner is one of the few worth bothering with.

If the freezing keeps happening even after you free space, I’d start suspecting the update itself, not just “junk files.” That part kinda sucks, but it’s true.
I’m with @kakeru and @voyageurdubois on the big point: no iPad cleaner app is going to magically purge deep iPadOS cache. I’ll disagree a bit with @mikeappsreviewer though, because for me the real culprit after updates is often app data bloat, not just photos.
If you want an app recommendation, Clever Cleaner is one of the few I’d actually bother testing.

- Won’t fix swollen System Data
- Can’t reach a lot of protected iPadOS cache
- Less useful if your storage issue is app documents, downloads, or corrupted update leftovers
- Photo suggestions still need human checking sometimes
My extra advice that the others didn’t really focus on:
look at apps with built-in downloads and creator files. CapCut, GarageBand, iMovie, Procreate, Lightroom, Canva, Kindle, VLC, Infuse, even comic or PDF reader apps can quietly hoard gigabytes. Some of them keep exports and temp project files long after you think you’re done.
Also check this weird one: open the App Store and update every app manually. I’ve had freezing after iOS updates that stopped only after old apps were updated to match the new system.
So yeah, Clever Cleaner for media cleanup, but don’t expect miracles if the update itself is what broke things.
